On the job - Bob Pappas

Journal photo by Bruce Penton

Bob Pappas - Union Shoe Store

What do you do?
Run the Union Shoe Store, as well as the shoe repair shop.

How did you get started?
I grew up in the business. Started off as a shoeshine boy and went to school as well, and came to work part-time after school, and I decided to stay with it.

What does the job involve?
Mostly right now retail sales. Shoe repair is maybe about five per cent of the business right now.

What’s the best part of the job?
Talking to people. Customers. It sounds corny, but that’s the truth.

What are the challenges?
Not being able to satisfy everybody, especially in footwear. It would be nice to be able to satisfy every customer who walks in the door. That’s the most frustrating part of the business.
