Christmas scrooged

Story: LETTER TO THE EDITOR; SCHOOL PUTS THE SCROOGE TO CHRISTMAS

Santa Claus won't be coming to Souris school this year and neither will any other Christmas themes.

Shame, shame on the Souris school administration and "head grinch" Dale Peak for their decision to take away Christmas,as reported in the Brandon Sun,27 Nov.

They tell us it is for "educational reasons and for the good of all kids and because the school has become more multicultural and of different faiths". If those are their best reasons and excuses to ban Christmas festivities at school, they are not very good ones.

Why should Christian faith believers be penalized for the sake of those,of a different faith and no faith?  They shouldn't be. What about "their" sensitivities? They have a right to celebrate Christmas and the traditions of Christmas in a fashion that they are accustomed to. Many of those customs being played out "in a school".

This was a community event for socializing and carol singing. There were concerts, decorating and putting gifts under the tree, and the grand finale, with the arrival of Santa in his red outfit, handing out presents and making sure that every child, big or small, had a small gift bag of Xmas candy and perhaps an orange and an assortment of nuts.

THIS IS CANADA! It is not South America,East Asia or India. Ask yourselves this. Would those countries willingly give up their traditions, culture and celebrations because it might be offensive to Christians living there and have children going to school in their communities? I don't think so.

Yet in Canada,we readily  succumb and adapt for the minorities; because we do not want to offend and that is supposed to make us feel good?

Why not consider having celebrations that would encompass Christian beliefs and separate ones for the other groups.

This issue, supposedly being "politically correct", is just one more example of senseless politics and needs to be challenged.
