Scouting perils: Wheaties had many chances to pick Shayne Wiebe

Only three of eight players Brandon Wheat Kings picked before Brandon native Shayne Wiebe was drafted 146th overall by Kamloops Blazers in the 2005 Western Hockey League bantam draft are still playing with the Wheat Kings.

The Wheat Kings acquired the 19-year-old Wiebe in a December trade for 17-year-old rookie Jordan DePape, who has eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in 24 games with the Blazers. Wiebe has 15 points in 19 games for Brandon.

Ignoring the stats, it was still a solid deal for the Wheat Kings, who acquired a lot of grit and experience in Wiebe in exchange for the potential of DePape, who has at least two more years in the league after this one. DePape is getting quite a bit of powerplay time with the Blazers while Wiebe is relegated to a secondary role on the extra-man unit with the offensively powerful Wheat Kings.

Still, one wonders: If the Wheat Kings had been able to peer into the crystal ball and look a few years into the future, perhaps they could have drafted Wiebe with a mid-round selection and held on to the talented DePape, too.

Here’s how that 2005 bantam draft unfolded for the Wheat Kings:

1st round — Sanfred King *

2nd round — Jordan Hale (still a Wheat King)

3rd round — Andrew Hayes (still a Wheat King)

4th round — Colby Robak (still a Wheat King)

5th round — Lucas Mikkelson *

6th round — Alexander Grill Donovan *

6th round — David Toews *

7th round — Andrew Hewitt *

8th round — Kamloops chose Shayne Wiebe with 146th pick overall.
