In honour of the 2010 Olympics, the Westman Journal presents "The City Olympics."
The automotive moguls: Driving on a rut-infested street after a snowstorm. Some of those ruts certainly test your suspension.
Long track speed driving: An attempt by local motorists to hit at least 60 km/h during peak travel times between Rosser Avenue and Kirkcaldy Drive on Eighteenth Street North. Two parts of the course provide tense moments as participants move along the bridge, over the rail tracks and then watch as the course narrows to the bridge over the river.
Short track slow driving: This course runs between Park and Rosser Avenues and features challenging obstacles like traffic lights, pedestrian crosswalks and school zones. Speeds of up to 50 km/h are possible
The cross city biathlon: Competitors walk 10 kilometres across the city on the walkways and city sidewalks, at times dodging slower non competitors, stray animals and obstacles left along the pathway.
Street Hockey: The city's police and fire departments meet in a friendly game of shinny. The location not yet decided.
Sidewalk plowing: Downtown merchants compete in this 25- metre clearing event in which they remove snow from in front of their downtown businesses. The winner gets to see a customer walk in their establishment with no snow on their footwear, thus it won't melt and leave a puddle on their store floor.
Bin Bumper Bowling: This is a non-sanctioned event and features cars driving down laneways trying to avoid garbage/recycle bins left out by homeowners. The winners are the vehicles which don't get scratches on their finish by avoiding contact with the bins.
The Figure Skating Pairs ( the only event that offers cash incentives): A city and school board rep are teamed up in this dancing event which sees how high they can jump. The higher they do, the more money they get (kind of like raising taxes, isn't it?)
On the subject of the Olympics, is it good or bad for the country that Vancouver has been warm for the games?
It dispels the myth we live in igloos in a frigid land where snowshoes and dog sleds are the best modes of transportation but on the other hand, that did have a certain mystique about it and provided us with chuckles.
