Letter: Metis not ‘First Nations’

In your recent article "Driving force for health, Olson earns Order of Manitoba honour, you mention Mrs. Olson's membership of the Southwest Region Manitoba Metis Federation Knowledge Network. As adaptation facilitator for the Southwest Region, I act as coordinator of this network. Mrs. Olson's hands-on approach to this initiative has been integral to its success. She most certainly is a deserving recipient of the Order.

Unfortunately, your article describes the purpose of this Network as "examining how the health system can better serve First Nations People.” The Metis are one of three recognized Aboriginal peoples in Canada, along with Inuit and First Nations, but they are most certainly not First Nations. We need to do a better job within our society ensuring everyone understands this important distinction.
