The Souris Fellowship Club is currently under going a facelift.
While workers are repairing the grout between the bricks. Fellowship treasurer, Roy Douglas said the building is in good shape.
“The bricks weren’t in danger of falling but you need to keep up with the maintenance on these old buildings,” Douglas said.
The Fellowship Club, formerly called the Drop In, was built in 1912 and housed the Souris Post Office until 1975.
At that time it was taken over as a senior’s centre and called the Drop In. The name switch to the Fellowship Club was more recent.
Douglas said they were able to access several grants totalling $5,800 from Community Places and from New Horizons. The balance of the facelift cost was picked up by the Fellowship Club,
The work, which began Aug. 16 is expected to be completed in a few days.
The Fellowship Club is home to about eight members, mostly seniors. That’s something that Douglas and the rest of the board would like to see change.
“We want to attract younger people to the club,” he said. “ It is such a great place to be and with some younger members on board that could continue for many more years. ”
Currently, the fall and winter are the busiest seasons at the Fellowship Club. There are card and shuffleboard leagues to join. As well, the building houses a pool table.
In addition to the regular activities, the building is also used for teas, showers and other community events on a regular basis.
