Lexi won’t be some teenage LPGA novelty

The best women golfers in the world will be putting their talents on display in Winnipeg this week and if you need more proof that pro golf is a young person’s game, look no further than 15-year-old Alexis Thompson.

Still three years away from being able to join the Ladies Professional Golfers Association, “Lexi” Thompson won’t be just a teenage novelty in the CN Canadian Women’s Open, a $2.25 million event at St. Charles Golf and Country Club Aug. 26-29 that offers the fourth-largest purse on the LPGA Tour this year. It’s not a “major,” but it’s close.

How great will the field be? At least the top 10 golfers in the women’s world ranking have signed up for the 72-hole tournament, which means that players such as Cristie Kerr, Ai Miyazato, Michelle Wie, defending CN champion Suzann Pettersen, Jiyai Shin, Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer, Angela Stanford and Morgan Pressel, along with top Canadians Alena Sharp and Lori Kane, will be in the field.

But to the discerning golf fan, Thompson might be among the most interesting entrants. A phenom like Wie was at ages 12 and 13, Thompson has — unlike Wie — her head screwed on straight. While Wie garnered worldwide attention as a young teen by eschewing the women’s tour and trying to compete against the men as often as possible, Thompson is apparently content to make her mark as one of the best female golfers in the history of the game.

She won the U.S. Junior at the ridiculously young age of 13 and finished tied for 10th at this year’s U.S. women’s open. Since turning pro a month or two ago, Thompson — whose brother, Nick, is a member of the PGA Tour — finished one stroke out of a playoff at the prestigious Evian Masters. Her claim to fame? She hits the ball a ton and has a nifty short game, two qualities that usually add up to great scoring ability.

The tournament at St. Charles will be only her fourth start as a pro, and her name is still not as prominent as the likes of Kerr, Pettersen, Creamer and Shin. But if you can make it to Winnipeg and see the world’s best up close, make a point of following superstar-to-be Alexis Thompson. Twenty years from now, you’ll be able to say, “I saw her when . . . “

• Comedy writer Jerry Perisho: “Former NFL coach Jimmy Johnson will be a contestant in the reality show “Survivor.” In their first challenge as they swim ashore, everyone has to survive the oil slick coming off Johnson’s hair.”

• Perisho again: “Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth finally passed the conditioning tests that will allow him to join training camp. It took him almost as long to get into football as it’s taking Brett Favre to get out.

• Headline at Fark.com: “Thomas declines job with Knicks, explaining, ‘I just can’t respect an organization that would hire me twice.’ “
