The Brandon Knights scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-4 lead at the Baseball Canada 2010 Pee Wee Boys’ Western Championship, but an eight-run bottom of the inning by the Abbotsford Angels propelled the B.C. club to a 15-11 win, a perfect 6-0 record and the championship in Brandon on Aug. 22.
Marshal Burgess and Mitchell Lyall led the knights, each went two-for-four with three RBI. Bradley Schoonbaert went 0-for-1 with four walks and scored three runs.
Keaton Boughen picked up with the win while Jordan Robertson was saddled with the loss.
Brandon Knights’ catcher James Shearer was among the award winners announced Sunday during the closing ceremonies. Shearer took home the Easton Top Catcher award after hitting .455 in the round robin with a .500 on-base percentage, two stolen bases and four runs scored.
Defensively, Shearer recorded 21 putouts and committed one error in 19 innings for a .955 fielding percentage.
The Easton Top Hitter award went to Griffin Keller of the Regina White Sox. Keller went 10-for-13 in four round-robin games to lead the championship with a .769 average.
The Easton Defensive Player award went to the Jordan Loewen of the Abbotsford Angels.
Loewen picked up two wins on the mound, allowing just three hits and picking up14 strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings during the round robin.
