Cruisin’ the Dub putting a wrap on 2010 season

Thursday, Sept. 2 will be the final Cruisin’ the Dub of 2010. After one of the most successful seasons ever I’m sure the finish will be one to remember.
The last cruise night came as a bit of a surprise for me. For years (well since 2006 at least) Cruisin’ the Dub has taken place on the first Thursday of the months of June, July, August and September. This is not always the case now. It is true that a lot of them happen to fall on that Thursday, but this can change with special occasions. This was true for the August edition. In fact, there wasn’t technically a Cruisin’ the Dub in August, it took place on July 30th in connection with Super Run 2010. Perhaps it was this unique union that brought the masses to Downtown Brandon.
As I am fortunate enough to have an apartment right in the heart of Downtown Brandon, I was able to see the cars filtering in on July 30. Curious, I started to wander down the street and it was then that I was completely blown away. With my past career in radio I have been to almost every cruise night in Brandon since it was simply a one block party on 9th Street. That certainly isn’t the case anymore. The vehicles went along Rosser from First all the way to 18th with only a few parking spaces left. It was overwhelming in the best way possible. With a fusion of shapes, colours, sounds, and smells hitting you from every direction.
Cruisin’ the Dub is not simply for the car enthusiasts (although they are certainly the ones who make it all possible), it also appeals to those who just like an outdoor party. It’s a chance to go out with your family and friends and truly enjoy an all ages event. There are food venders along the street that offer an array of culinary options to tempt your taste buds. There is also a beverage gardens for those over 18 who wish to indulge in a drink or two. The kiddies also get an extra special treat as it is A&W who are the sponsors the big bear will be on hand giving out root beer suckers, balloons and last time I think I saw a few stickers as well.
The sounds will be curtsey of Brandon rock band Nuthin But Trouble or NBT for short. These guys have been rockin’ stages and filling dance floors for some time now and never disappoint. As their facebook says, they are “rock with attitude”!
The one with the most attitude and best rock strut around these parts is lead vocalist Mike Edgar. The man is rock style through and through. Keeping things rock steady are the rhythm section, drummer and vocalist Scott Warren and bass player Jack McDonald. And because this band is hard core one guitar player will simply not due. Brendan Hicks of Blacklite Buddha found himself playing double duty as he takes on rhythm guitar and vocals while Kevin Wielenga (who has been known to grace the stage with a few bands around town) takes over on lead guitar.
The evening begins at 6 p.m. and goes until 9 p.m.
If you are interested in bringing a vehicle down I suggest that you start making your way there by 5 p.m. if you want a sweet spot.
