Cougars open series with win

By Grant Moffat

The Southwest Cougars played host to the Winnipeg Thrashers on Sunday afternoon in Melita, and it was the Cougars who did the thrashing as they dumped the Thrashers 8-1 to take a 1 game series lead. The teams who went into the game with the same record after sweeping there opening round series started off rather timidly. The Thrashers killed off a couple of Cougar power plays, while the Cougars also staved off the Thrashers on their first power play. The Cougars went on the man advantage for the third time at 16:52 and Cameron Rowat made them pay as he scored from Jordan Greig and Sutton Olson. The first period outshot the Cougars 10-9. Garrett Johnston tied the score with a point shot just over 3 minutes into the period and it looked like the game was on. David Robertson fired a shot from the point three minutes later from Rowat and Aubrey Chapman. No one saw it coming but the Cougars took over. Cameron Whyte made it 3-1 just over a minute later from Robertson and Daylon Creasy. Lucas Oliver got the Melita fans excited as he found the net a minute later from Rowat and Olson to chase Brenden Fieblekorn from the Thrashers net after giving up 4 goals on 17 shots. Hudson Morrison welcomed Shaun Gerbinski to the game as he scored 4 minutes later. Cameron Rowat scored a power play goal with 2:18 left in the period from Olson and Oliver for the 6-1 lead. The Cougars 5 goal outburst in 11 minutes was something they hadn’t done this year. Cameron Rowat completed his hat trick when he scored a shorthanded goal 40 seconds into the third period. Hudson Morrison completed the scoring when he banged in a loose puck from Oliver and Brady Chyzyk 3 minutes into the period. The Cougars dominated throughout the game. Cameron Rowat finished with the hat trick and a pair of assists for a 5 point night and now has 6 goals and 8 helpers in his last 4 games. Lucas Oliver continues to find the net and now has 11 points in his last 4 games, while Hudson Morrison has chipped in with 9 points on the Cougars top line. Brian Archibald finished with 31 saves, while the Cougars fired 28 at the Thrashers net. Game 2 in the series is Wednesday night in Winnipeg. Game three is back in Souris on Friday March 9th. The 2012 Regional Telus Cup is quickly approaching in Virden from March 29 to April 1st. If you would like to purchase a weekend pass prior to the tournament they are at a $20 discount for all 7 games if purchased before March 15.
