Two Green Cats, though deceived by their name, is a rock’n’roll group of five from Drummandville, Quebec who have set out on a cross-country tour, including a stop in Brandon on June 1. The name has a very explicit explanation, Two because the band started out with only two members in 2007, William Larochelle and Maxime Lussier. The two met up and jammed in Maxime’s garage, it was simple, William on vocals and guitar and Max on the Drums. Then in 2009 brothers Christian and Rico Desjardins joined in, and David Beru came soon after. Green on the other hand was just from William and Maximes mutual love for the Irish.
“Cats because we are independent and we walk the hard road like cats,” explained Rico Desjardins, keyboard player.
Since they began, Two Green Cats have released a four-song EP and a 12 song self titled album, both which were self-produced. David Beru, bass player, studied music production which was a big bonus for the Cats.
Two Green Cats have played nearly 100 shows in Quebec but have never taken their live music elsewhere. With the release of their new album ‘Ink For A Queen.’ the band has decided to spread their wings and travel across the provinces to share their music and spirit.
When asked where the inspiration for this album came from, Desjardins explained that there are good and bad feelings between women and men and that women rule the world.
“Without queens there are no kings,” said Desjardins.
“That’s what inspired us for the texts and music.”
“We did what we do best, we looked and loved the rock from the old kings of rock of the 60’s and 70’s and we rolled it into something fresh.”
Desjardins listed Rory Gallgher, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Beatles and much more as their inspirations and influences.
Even though Two Green Cats haven’t left Quebec with their music yet, they have already made some fond memories. One night in Sherbrooke at Woodstock, a bar, a drunk man jumped on stage and started singing along with the band.
“He sang like a pig,” said Desjardins, explaining how the man did the “dance-a-gogo,” and undressed himself, dancing around completely naked for the crowd. “Haha, he tried stealing the show from us.”
The Two Green Cats played a more important and memorable show though, at the top of the Olympic stadium in Montreal.
“It was a great experience, it was the first time a show took place in there.”
Two Green Cats are very excited about their first tour and hope a lot of people join them for their show in Brandon.
“We thought it would be a nice place to stop and play our music on the tour,” said Desjardins.
“We can’t wait to rock Brandon!”
Two Green Cats are bringing Westman a touch of today’s finest rock’n’roll mixed with the 1970’s sounds and visions. Two Green Cats will be playing on June 1st at The Double Decker.
