Westman Wolverines look for new faces this season

After an immense improvement in their second season, the Westman Major Wolverines are opening their registration for the 2012 season this week. Registration is going on this week at Neelin High School on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. Registration costs $100 up front, totalling $400 after a payment schedule is implemented. This fee covers cost of equipment and travel.
“The difference in the team from our first season to last year was outstanding,” said Dave Stantial, Wolverines Head Coach.
“In our first year we went 0-8, but last year we were a 4-4 team, and we plan to continue improving.”
Last year the ‘Reens fielded a full 42-man roster, and while a fair number of the players are returning, Stantial says he has already received a lot of interest from high school grads.
“Lots of guys want to keep playing the sport of football after graduating, and the ‘Reens is a great place to do it,” he said.
“It’s a great group of guys; there is no big difference between the veterans and new players. We work as a team, no one is better than anyone else based on seniority.”
The Wolverines can only field a 42-man team, so if there are more registrations Stantial says there will have to be some cuts, and while every position is up-for-grabs, there are a few spots the team really needs players.
“We are particularly looking for some offensive and defensive linemen,” said Stantial.
“We have some big holes left by players leaving us last year in the lines, so we are really hoping to get some fresh faces to step up and fill them.”
“We should be an exciting team to watch this year,” said Offensive Coordinator Bryce Ketcheson.
“We have been working all year-round to be a better team this season. We want to come into the season and hit the ground running.”
The team will practice three times weekly to start, and when August rolls around that will be reduced to two practices and one game a week. Anyone with prior football experience aged 18-22 is welcome to come register and tryout with the Westman Major Wolverines.
