Every 24 hours 27 Canadians are diagnosed with a brain tumour. There is no cure.
In September 2011 Connor Thomson, a 27-year-old husband, father, and four year member of the Winnipeg Police Service was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Almost two months later Thomson underwent surgery to have his tumour removed, only to later be diagnosed with brain cancer. Thomson has a grade two Oligodendroglima tumours and now has the average life expectancy of 10 years.
With patience and hope along with the resources from The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada (BTFC) Thomson has returned to work and is moving forward with his life.
2012 marks the BTFC’s 30th anniversary. The BTFC provides hope and support to brain tumour patients and is the only group dedicated to overcoming this deadly disease.
Wanting to have a positive attitude towards life, Thomson has dedicated his time to organizing a fundraising event in Brandon to raise awareness and funding to further brain tumour research.
Birdies For Brain Tumours is a golf tournament being held at the Glen Lea Golf Course on July 8th. Tee times are at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and a dinner party with lots of great door prizes will be held at Houston’s Country Roadhouse later in the evening at 6:30 p.m.
“I feel really proud and it means a lot to myself to be able to organize this tournament because I was diagnosed with brain cancer,” said Thomson.
Most of the funds raised will be donated to the BTFC to fund critical brain cancer research while the other part will help pay for the essentials on that day.
Thomson would like Westman’s help in ensuring Birdies for Brain Tumours is a success. The organization is looking for business to sponsor a hole on the course with a donation of $500. Signage will be advertised at your hole and you are more than welcome to place any additional advertising.
Donations of any amount are welcomed and greatly appreciated. Charitable tax receipts will be provided upon request.
“My basic goal is to raise awareness and funds, and have fun golfing while I do it,” said Thomson.
There is no cure for brain cancer but with the help of the community Thomson would like to raise more awareness and funds needed to find the cure.
