LONDON - The Olympic torch has climbed the tallest mountain in England and Wales in the hands of one of Britain's best-loved mountaineers.
Chris Bonington carried the flame to the top of Snowdon in Gwynedd, north Wales on Tuesday. It was on the same 3,560-foot (1,085-meter) mountain that the now-77-year-old mountaineer began his career in 1951.
Bonington says that while he had climbed Snowdon many times, Tuesday marked the first time he had used the Snowdon Mountain Railway to get to the top of the mountain, where he posed for pictures.
Bonington — who has also climbed Mount Everest and was knighted in 1996 for his services to mountaineering — described taking part in the torch relay, which is now in its 11th day, as "a special moment."
