Funds for Furry Friends was raising money to enhance their ‘Spay Neuter Incentive Program,’ or SNIP, last weekend with their public fundraiser at Home Depot. Volunteers were locked in the ‘pound’ until enough money was raised for them to get out.
Funds for Furry Friends is a nationally registered charity from Brandon run completely by volunteers. Since beginning in 2001, the organization has rescued 1392 dogs through a foster home-based program, meaning each of the dogs is in the care of a loving temporary family until a suitable ‘forever family’ is found.
The SNIP program is an initiative of FFFF. It offers low-cost spaying and neutering for low income families as an incentive for adopting from the local city pound. SNIP is designed to help spay one cat or dog per household from the pound.
“It’s a great program,” said D’Arcy Barker, Chief Financial Officer of FFFF.
“Unwanted litters of pets are the biggest problem for pet-owners. Most people just don’t have the means to take care of a new batch of unwanted cats or dogs, and SNIP helps to cut down on that.”
The group raised $17,800 at the event, and while they were aiming for $20,000, it was still a 50 per cent increase from the funds they raised last year.
