Brandon-based Westman Communications Group has been recognized as one of Manitoba’s top employers by a Toronto publisher of employment periodicals.
Mediacorp Canada Inc. released its annual list of the province’s top 30 employers in a special publication that was distributed with the Winnipeg Free Press on Nov. 28. Westman Communications Group was included on the list for the second consecutive year.
“With innovation being one of our key corporate values, we are always looking for new ways to implement forward-thinking initiatives in our workplace,” the company’s president and chief executive officer said in a press release. “This provincial award reflects our commitment to that value as well as our other corporate values of community, customer experience, integrity and teamwork.”
Mediacorp Canada has managed Canada’s Top 100 Employers project since 1999. This initiative includes 18 regional and special-interest editorial competitions. The list of Manitoba’s Top 30 Employers, which recognizes employers that offer exceptional workplaces in their respective industries, has been published since 2006. The companies are evaluated on several criteria including the physical workplace; work atmosphere and social culture; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.
Both private and public employers of any size can apply to be recognized and each is judged against others within their field.
“We used to be a cable company, but since we’ve moved into Internet services as well, it has made us attractive to more potential employees,” Westman Communication’s chief marketing officer John Quail said, adding that the expansion of the company throughout western Manitoba has also been a benefit for both the company and its employees.
“We’re into helping people across the board, from our customers to our employees and we try to give back to the community. We’ve been moving into other communities and a lot of people are saying they’re interested in working with us.”
Westman Communications, a telecommunications company that provides Internet, phone, television and programming services, was specifically recognized for its social committee and its support of community charities. The social committee hosts several events per year for employees; from monthly events and seasonal parties to a CEO-President’s Barbecue and “Co-op Week” celebrations to mark the company’s cooperative spirit and business model.
As far as community involvement, Westman Communications has a “dollar matching” gift program which sees the company matching employee donations to local charities dollar-for-dollar up to $12,000.
Established in 1978, Westman Communications Group has 109 full-time and eight part-time employees in its Canadian operations. The average age of employees is 42 and its longest serving worker has been with them for 40 years.
