BPS Blotter: The latest from the Brandon Police Service files

The "BPS Blotter" is a Westman Journal column that includes highlights of the latest law enforcement activities through the previous few days.

Dec. 7: Theft from business

A 26-year-old man was arrested Friday afternoon following a pair of calls reporting thefts at Brandon businesses.

Members of the Brandon Police Service were initially called to a commercial establishment on the 600 block of Rosser Avenue, where a suspect or suspects entered the building through an unlocked rear door and stole personal items belonging to the business’s staff.

A suspect was not found in this case, but the male arrested that afternoon relates to an incident called in at about 3 p.m. Police were told a man was stealing merchandise from a Corral Centre business. The 26-year-old man who was in possession of about $500 in stolen goods was located in the area shortly after and taken into custody. It was found that the man was also bound by a condition not to enter the Corral Centre.

Meanwhile, BPS members arrived at a residence on the 3600 block of Centennial Boulevard at about 11 a.m. Friday seeking a 47-year-old man with an outstanding warrant for breach of probation. He was found, arrested and detained at the Brandon Correctional Centre (BCC).

The Winnipeg Police Service arrested a 30-year-old woman wanted on three unspecified BPS warrants. She was scheduled to appear in court in Winnipeg.

A 59-year-old man was arrested for breach of the peace at about 6:44 p.m. when he was found intoxicated at a residence on the 600 block of McDiarmid Drive. The man was detained at the BCC then released when sober.

Dec. 8: Aggravated assault and firearms offences

Police responded to a call of a disturbance at a business on the 1100 block of 18th Street at 3:22 a.m. Saturday. A 43-year-old Birtle, Man. man was found to be intoxicated and was detained for the night. The man was handed a $672 ticket for disorderly conduct in a licensed premises when he was released later that day.

The report of a gunshot brought BPS members to a north-end Brandon residence at about 8:05 a.m. Saturday. A 25-year-old woman was found on site with a wound to her leg caused by a gun. A 29-year-old Brandon man arrested at the home said he was trying to unload a shotgun when it fired, striking his girlfriend who confirmed the incident was an accident. Nevertheless, a bolt action, 12-guage shotgun was found and seized as evidence.

The man was released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for January, while the condition of the woman was not available.

A 30-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman from Winnipeg were arrested after an off-duty BPS member found a vehicle Saturday afternoon with license plates on the front and back that did not match. The vehicle was determined stolen and the man and woman both had outstanding warrants on them. They were scheduled to appear in court Sunday morning.

A 24-year-old man was arrested following several thefts from a retail store in north Brandon through the previous week. The man’s court appearance was scheduled in January.

A white, 2015 Honda CRV with license plates GBW 851 was reported stolen from the 000 block of Rosser Avenue at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday.

Finally, two people were arrested under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act and another four were taken in for breach of the peace.

Dec. 9: Recreational vehicle thefts, domestic assault and forcible confinement

A 2012 Ski-Doo 800 snowmobile with a wrapped decal job was reported stolen just after noon on Sunday from a residence on Winston Bay. The theft occurred sometime through the night before.

An ATV and utility trailer were reported stolen not long after. Police received a call at 12:44 p.m. regarding the theft from a residence in Brentwood Village Trailer Court. Like the snowmobile, the ATV and the trailer went missing sometime the night before. The quad is an orange Polaris Sportsman XP1000, while the Rainbow utility trailer is black with plates reading U308G.

Winnipeg Police arrested a 30-year-old woman at about 1:25 p.m. related to a BPS warrant for robbery and forcible confinement. She was scheduled to appear in court in Winnipeg on Monday.

About a half hour later, a woman called Brandon Police to report that her ex-boyfriend had entered her residence the previous morning and assaulted her by holding her down, slapping her and choking her. The man then physically restrained her from leaving the suite. A 38-year-old Brandon man was located and arrested to appear in court on Monday. The woman did not require medical attention.

At 4 p.m. Sunday, a man located at a residence on the 200 block of McDiarmid Drive on an unrelated matter asked police to see if he a warrant had been taken out on him. The 36-year-old Brandon resident did and was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court.

Dec. 10: Home invasion, theft over $5000

Brandon Police spotted a truck pulling a trailer with a side-by-side ATV travelling east on Highway 110 near 17th Street East at about 4:45 a.m. Monday. The officers followed the vehicle to the Trans Canada Highway and attempted to stop it by turning on their overhead lights. The truck ran a stop sign and traveled through a ditch into a field on the north side of the highway. Three occupants exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Police caught two of the men, while a BPS police dog apprehended the third.

A 21-year-old Silver Ridge, Man. man and a 31-year-old Brandon man were arrested for possession of property obtained by crime and theft over $5000. They are scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 21. A 16-year-old Brandon youth was also arrested on the same charges, plus a warrant for breach of probation. He will appear in court on Jan. 22.

A Polaris 700 ATV side-by-side, an outboard motor and a Norbert utility trailer were recovered in the incident.

At about 8 p.m. that evening, a 9-1-1 call reported that three masked individuals had forcibly entered a residence in Brentwood Village Trailer Court, took a Remington 12-guage, pump-action shotgun then fled on foot before police were called. An investigation into the matter continues.

Meanwhile, two warrant arrests were executed on Monday as well. A 63-year-old man from West Interlake, Man. turned himself into Lundar RCMP due to an outstanding warrant for breach of undertaking. He was released with a scheduled court appearance on Jan. 14.

On Monday afternoon, BPS was called by Probation Services who reported that a man with a warrant for failure to appear for prints was in their office. Officers attended the Probation Services office and arrested a 22-year-old Brandon man, who was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Dec. 11: Care and control while impaired

Police were told a woman with a warrant for failure to comply with a probation order was reported on the 800 block of Pacific Avenue at about 1:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. The 45-year-old Brandon woman was located, arrested and released with a court date scheduled for Jan. 10.

About 45 minutes later, BPS members were called to the 600 block of 13th Street on a report of a man passed out behind the steering wheel of a vehicle stopped against a snow bank. The 38-year-old Brandon man was arrested and taken in for breathalyzer testing. He provided two samples that were found to be over the legal limit for driving a vehicle while impaired. He was charged with care and control of a vehicle while over .08 with a court appearance set for this coming Monday.

One other person was arrested for breach of the peace and released once sober.
