BPS Blotter: The latest from the Brandon Police Service files

The "BPS Blotter" is a Westman Journal column that includes highlights of the latest law enforcement activities through the previous few days.

Dec. 27: Domestic assault, assault with a weapon and break and enter

Officers with the Brandon Police Service stopped a vehicle with front-end damage driving erratically along 18th Street near Richmond Avenue at about 6:49 a.m. on Dec. 27. Officers found the driver showing signs of impairment and arrested a 22-year-old Boissevain, Man. man for refusing a breathalyzer and impaired driving. He was released with a court appearance scheduled for this month.

At about 11:30 a.m., police responded to a domestic dispute call at a residence on Baker Bay. Two Brandon residents, a 34-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, were charged with assault when both claimed to have been attacked by the other individual. Their court appearance is scheduled to occur in February.

The owner of an apartment building on the 1500 block of 10th Street reported that a man who had previously been evicted had moved back into the apartment. Police responded during the afternoon and charged a 30-year-old Erickson, Man. man for break and enter after it was discovered he allegedly broke into the apartment as it was being renovated. He will appear in court next month.

Two sisters involved in an altercation at a residence on the 700 block of 10th Street resulted in charges against a 19-year-old Sioux Valley woman. An argument broke out between the two individuals on Thursday evening. One of the women grabbed a machete and cut the other on the left hand. The suspect was located nearby and arrested for assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. She will appear in court in February.

Dec. 28: Arrest warrants and theft

BPS members arrested a 30-year-old Brandon man at his northend residence Friday evening based on outstanding warrants for break and enter, obstruction of a peace officer and failure to appear in court. He was released with a court appearance scheduled to take place in February.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old woman was arrested after police attempted to find her at a residence at about 11:20 p.m. The woman had a warrant out for theft under $5000 and will appear in court next month.

BPS received a complaint from a business regarding a female who filled her vehicle with more than $100 worth of fuel and left without paying. The suspect was identified through surveillance and turned herself in to police Friday evening. The 42-year-old Rapid City, Man. resident was arrested for theft under $5000 and released with a court appearance scheduled in February.

Four other individuals were detained under the Intoxicated Person Detention Act, while two others were arrested for breach of peace and held in the Brandon Correctional Centre until sober.

Dec. 29: Assault of a police officer, domestic assault

At about 2 a.m. Saturday, BPS members responded to three 9-1-1 calls reporting a fight involving several people in the city's downtown core. A 46-year-old Brandon man who was involved in the fight and bleeding from the mouth was located and treated for injuries. As officers attended to the man and asked questions about the altercation, he became combative, spitting blood on one of the BPS members. He was arrested for assault of a peace officer and treated for his injuries before being released for a scheduled court appearance in February.

An hour later, BPS members responded to a call from a female reporting she had been assaulted by her boyfirend at a residence in the city's south end. Officers determined that the suspect grabbed the victim by the throat during an argument, leading them to arrest a 40-year-old located inside the residence for domestic assault. The woman was not injured in the altercation. The man has a court date set for later this month.

AT 4:40 a.m., an intoxicated male youth arrived at the BPS station and was detained under the Intoxicated Person Detention Act. Later, a police vehicle was found have had a window destroyed and an investigation found that the 16-year-old male had used a metal bar to damage the vehicle before entering the police station. The youth was arrested for mischief to property, released to custody and is scheduled to appear in court this month.

A man walking in downtown Brandon at about 10:50 p.m. was found to have an oustanding warrant for his arrest for breach of a court order. The 33-year-old Brandon resident was arrested and released with a court appearance set for February.

Dec. 30: Weapons offences

BPS members were called to a dispute between a landlord and a tenant on the 700 block of 10th Street at about 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. When police arrived, a 38-year-old Brandon woman was found to have barricaded herself inside the residence. Officers forced the door open when the woman threatened to harm herself with "edged weapons." A taser was used when she did not comply with the police and she was taken into custody. The woman was charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of weapons while prohibited. She was held at the Brandon Correctional Centre to appear in court on Monday.

In Winnipeg, a 37-year-old Winnipeg man wanted on a BPS warrant for breach of probation was arrested by that city's police service and faces further charges following an incident there.

BPS members responded to a request that an individual be removed from a residence on the 300 block of 11th Street at about 10:50 p.m. A 39-year-old Brandon woman at the scene was found to have an outstanding warrant for breach of probation and was arrested.

Dec. 31: Breach of undertaking and intoxicated persons

A 21-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, both of Brandon, were arrested for breach of undertaking after officers attending their 14th Street home on Dec. 27 found them not abiding by a curfew. The pair were found on Monday and arrested for a court appearance the same day.

At 2:46 Monday afternoon, the driver of a vehicle stopped on 9th Street was found to be prohibited from driving and charged. The 47-year-old Sioux Valley man will appear in court on Feb. 25.

A little more than hour later, Brandon City Transit reported an intoxicated individual sleeping on a city bus. The 37-year-old Brandon woman was detained under the Intoxicated Person Detention Act and lodged at the BCC until sober.

Another individual – a 49-year-old man – was found to be extremely intoxicated on the 800 block of Rosser Avenue at 7:16 p.m. New Year's Eve. He, too, was taken into custody and released when sober.


Jan. 1: Domestic assault, impaired driving


BPS members were called to a hotel on 18th Street North for assistance in removing an intoxicated Griswold, Man. man from a room. The 45-year-old was found to have a Virden RCMP warrant out on him for failing to comply with probation. He was detained at the BCC for a court appearance later that morning.


At 2:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a domestic dispute on the 300 block of Princess Avenue. A 53-year-old Brandon man who had allegedly grabbed a female by the throat was arrested and held at the BCC until sober. He was released with a court date to be scheduled.


At about the same time, a call reporting a possible impaired driver on 1st Street North moved officers to attend the area where they found and stopped a vehicle on the 200 block of Princess Avenue East. A 27-year-old Brandon man was charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level over .08.


An hour and a half later, police responded to a complaint of a disturbance at a residence on 4th Street. A 41-year-old Brandon man was arrested for breach of peace and held at the BCC until sober.


A driver refused to stop for police at 34th Street and Victoria Avenue at about 5:17 p.m., leading to a pursuit along 34th Street, Rosser Avenue and 26th Street. As the speed of the chase increased to between 70 and 90 kilometers per hour, officers terminated the pursuit, later locating the suspected vehicle abandoned in east Brandon. An investigation into the incident continues.

Just before 6 p.m., BPS officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence in East Brandon, where they found an intoxicated 17-year-old female. The girl was taken into custody for breach of peace and released from the BCC once sober. A little less than two hour later, another intoxicated female was arrested on the same charges at a residence on 12 Street. The 29-year-old woman was released once sober.


A 38-year-old Brandon woman was arrested for assault with a weapon and breach of undertaking when police responded to an assault complaint at a residence in West Brandon. The woman was held at BCC for a court appearance on Wednesday.


Jan. 2: Drug possession


BPS officers located a 54-year-old man from Minnedosa, Man. sleeping in his vehicle at about 10 a.m. Wednesday morning. 
An investigation found that the man was in possession of methamphetamine. He was arrested with a promise to appear in court March 14.

Arrests were made on three individuals with warrants between 10: 15 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday. The first saw Winnipeg Police dealing with a 40-year-old Winnipeg man on an unrelated matter finding him with an endorsed warrant from BPS on contempt of court and failture to attend as a witness. The man was held in Winnipeg for a court appearance on Thursday. At about 11:30 a.m., BPS members were called to a residence on Frederick Street on an unrelated matter when they found a 17-year-old youth was wanted on an edorsed warrant for failure to appear in court and carry and concealed weapons charges. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 22.

Finally, a 56-year-old Brandon man was arrested on a warrant for failure to attend court when the man turned himself in to the BPS station. His court date is scheduled for Jan. 31.

Officers responded to a complaint of a domestic assault at a residence on 10th Street at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. A 59-year-old Brandon man was arrested at the scene and also found to be in breach of probation for attending the residence and consuming alcohol.

About four hours later, officers attended a residence on the 1100 block of Rosser Avenue seeking a 25-year-old female. The woman was found in the residence and arrested on a warrant for breach of probation, failure to attend court and falure to attend for identification. She was kept in custody until a court appearance on Thursday.

An intoxicated 46-year-old Brandon man causing problems at a residence on 26th Street was detained at the BCC and released the next morning when sober.

Jan. 3: Weapons charges

BPS members made a traffic stop on the 300 block of 20th Street at about 1:45 a.m. One of the vehicle's passengers, a 19-year-old Brandon man, was discovered to be carrying brass knuckles and a handgun, which was later determined to be a BB gun. The man was charged with two counts of possession of weapons for dangerous purposes, possession of a prohibited weapon and concealing a weapon. He was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court on March 4.

A 23-year-old female with no fixed address provided police with a false name at the traffic stop. Her identification was found in the car and police found she had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear for prints and possession of a controlled substance. She was held in custody until a Thursday morning court appearance.
