Farm accident kills Virden-area man; Treherne fire destroys store

A 63-year-old Prairie View man has died after getting his clothing caught in machinery. Meanwhile, a fire on Saturday destroyed a Treherne, Man. grocery store.

Virden RCMP is reporting the death of an unidentified Virden-area farmer from an apparent work-related accident on Monday.

A 63-year-old Prairie View man suffered serious injuries after getting his clothing caught in farm machinery as he was working with a tractor and a grain auger. He died at the scene.

RCMP officers responded to reports of a death on the Westman farm at about 9:25 p.m. Monday evening. The site is located about 15 kilometers northwest of Virden. Police and Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health are investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, the community of Treherne, Man. is reeling after a fire destroyed the town’s primary grocery store on Saturday night.

The Norfolk-Treherne Fire Department was called to the fire at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the Treherne Food Store on Railway Avenue. Emergency responders from Victoria and Rathwell were also called in to contain the situation, but cold and windy conditions effected their abilities to battle the blaze. The building was completely destroyed.

No one was injured in the fire, which is still under investigation by Manitoba’s Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Treherne is located about 125 kilometers southeast of Brandon.
