Brandon-Souris Conservative MP Larry Maguire recently launched an online petition on his website calling on the Canadian Blood Services to reverse their decision to close the Brandon clinic this June. The petition, when first released, was signed by more than 1,000 people in under 24 hours. Maguire is still encouraging those who want to join him in fighting to keep the clinic open to do so by visiting www.larrymaguire.ca/blood.
“It is evident Westman residents are serious about keeping our blood clinic open,” Maguire said in a release. “I will continue to stand up for the many donors who roll up their sleeves and the employees who will be laid off. I am asking folks to take a couple minutes out of their day and sign the petition to save our blood clinic.”
Maguire recently met with representatives from the Canadian Blood Services, stressing the need for the Brandon clinic to remain open and for rural mobile clinics to continue to be made available. In that meeting he reiterated his position that they should reverse their decision to permanently close the clinic and layoff the staff.
Even though the federal government has no direct say on the matter, Maguire says he’s been a vocal opponent of the closure since it was announced.
“I’ve heard from hundreds of Westman residents in the past couple weeks and it is evident we are ready to fight to save our blood clinic.”
Maguire plans to keep the pressure on the Canadian Blood Services in the weeks ahead. He says he’s encouraged to see that many people have already sent letters and emails and is hoping to present his petition to Canadian Blood Services sometime in April.
“I will continue to be a strong voice for Westman and ensure that our concerns are heard loud and clear in Ottawa.”
