Multi-dwelling home destroyed by fire Tuesday

A 34-year-old Brandon man has been arrested for arson following a fire that destroyed a three-storey, home containing apartment suites on Louise Street.

A 34-year-old Brandon man is facing arson charges after allegedly starting a fire that destroyed a multi-dwelling unit on Louise Avenue Tuesday.

The Brandon Police Service and Brandon Fire and Emergency Service members responded to a 9-1-1 call at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters found smoke and flames coming out of the side of a three-storey house on the 300 block of Louise Avenue at the intersection with 4th Street. Police officers ensured there were no occupants in the house at the time.

A man staring at the fire near the house was approached by officers, where the man admitted to starting the blaze during a conversation. The man said he lived in a suite on the main floor of the house.

Firefighters worked to control the fire well into Tuesday evening. Although the incident is still under investigation, the alleged arsonist was arrested hand held in the Brandon Correctional Centre to appear in court on Wednesday.
