Turn up the heat! Extreme cold in Manitoba generates record demand for power

WINNIPEG — Manitoba Hydro says it has set an all-time record for electricity use during frigid weather.

The Crown corporation says its highest-ever peak load of 4,924 megawatts was set Wednesday morning when the temperature in Winnipeg was -40 C.

The previous record was 4,801 megawatts, which was set Jan. 13, 2017.

Hydro says more than 95 per cent of Wednesday’s peak load was supplied through hydroelectric generation in Manitoba.

The utility says its system is designed to meet a growing demand, especially during the bitter cold. (CTV Winnipeg)
